By 2020, the municipally-owned energy company Mälarenergi aims to be completely free from fossil fuels like coal and oil. As part of this effort, Mälarenergi will be building a seventh CHP unit in Västerås. The CHP facility is the biggest in Sweden and will produce energy for the electricity grid and the district heating network.
Block 7 will be fuelled by recycled wood, have a design capacity of 150 MWh (thermal effect) and will represent approximately 36 per cent of heating production.
When Block 7 is commissioned in 2020, Mälarenergi will be independent of fossil fuels.
COWI has been tasked with planning the preparation of the site for the new CHP facility
The project is split into several sub-projects, all involving concrete structures cast on site.
